ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an onto-historical understanding of the current crisis that will allow researchers to argue that the role of higher education institutions should be edu-care that is the education of a new breed of agents of change able to cultivate a new paradigm centered on care. Universities are facing a crucial challenge: to continue reinforcing a view of the world that is increasingly making life unsustainable in planet earth or to make a significant contribution to the development of an ability to unfold and sustain an ethos of holistic care. The ancient artisan illustrates the particular respectful, careful, mediating bringing-forth nature of the bringing-forth of tekhne: techne involves “caring for beings and letting them grow.” Meditative thinking is the type of thinking related to the poietical mode of revealing of tekhne, and thus to care, since essential care is poiesis.
