ABSTRACT

The question of the Labour Contract and its terms is of great importance; it will be found to cover a wide variety of forms, from a sort of declaration of terms of servitude to a charter of the worker's rights. A curious feature of the legislation of many countries on the subject of labour contracts is the implication that the employer will always be European, or at least not an African. The terms of the agreement have in most cases been subjected to control; security is provided for proper housing, sanitation, medical attention, and similar requirements, while an undertaking to provide clothing, journey facilities, and other advantages is also often included. The form of the contract varies greatly, though the provisions included in it are usually much the same; it may also be individual, or collective to cover the requirements of a whole gang.
