ABSTRACT

Once the US Environmental Protection Agency establishes the concept of a new or emerging contaminant and assigns a health advisory standard to it, the need to address that contaminant in policy with the host nation (HN) is critical. To simplify the context, these foreign or non-US nations that "host" organizations with US interests will be addressed as "HNs". This chapter proposes that the adoption and expansion of both the Safe Drinking Water Act, Source water assessment protection programs and the US Department of Defense, Occupational Environmental Health Site Assessment initiatives to include ECs would allow them to complement each other and provide a viable direction to take. The intended purpose for this chapter is to give insight to others outside the military, including nongovernmental organizations and US businesses, who may have goals to either help improve water quality or simply establish good environmental stewardship practices while doing business as a guest of an HN.
