ABSTRACT

This chapter utilizes narrative theory and black music history to reveal how Beyoncé as CEO of Parkwood Entertainment utilizes the shared emotional world of “transmedia storytelling” to tackle issues of racialized patriarchy and gender oppression in Lemonade. It also explores how work that seems “highly improbable” when it comes to Black women has historically had a significant impact on the recording industry for over a century: a phenomenon known as the “black swan effect.”
