ABSTRACT

The starting-point for the curriculum is the pupil as he is and for that reason considerable emphasis is placed upon the teacher's knowledge of the pupil. In the process teacher becomes teachers, for the strategies must operate over the whole school life of the pupil, involving the school as an institution and, beyond it, the whole system of education as it interacts with wide social pressures. To operate with the concept of education for awareness the teacher must understand that for each slow learner areas of knowledge can be defined which must be learned with accuracy, permanency and understanding if they are to have any value for the pupil. Because of their learning difficulties, slow learners are often required to spend a disproportionate amount of time in acquiring basic knowledge and skills with the result that their cultural and social education is narrower and less rich than it might have been.
