ABSTRACT

The most important reason to apply stage makeup is to contour the face. Essentially, makeup is painted lighting effects on the face. What stage lights dilute, makeup can pronounce. “Light, Shadow, and Contouring” delves into the reasons artists use stage makeup and gives specific examples of how lighting controls shadow. Highlight colors allow the high points of the face to appear higher and bolder while shadow colors allow the low points to recede into space. By using this basic principle, students will understand the necessity of stage effects and how best to manipulate contouring. At the end of the chapter, there is a grayscale chart students are encouraged to copy as practice for makeup blending.
