ABSTRACT

An ethanol extract of Asystasia travancorica was studied for its anticancer and immunomodulatory activity. The anticancer activity of the ethanol extract of whole plant of A. travancorica was evaluated against S180 cell line in Swiss albino mice. Evaluation of the anticancer effect of ethanol extract of whole plant of A. travancorica on tumor growth and host survival time was made by the study of the following parameters: solid tumor volume, viable and nonviable cell count, and life span of host. Administrations of A. travancorica extract (300 mg/kg) could inhibit the solid tumor development in mice induced with S180 tumor cell lines and increase the life span of mice. The immunomodulatory effects of A. travancorica extract were examined with S180 bearing mice. Young adult Swiss albino mice inoculated with S180 cells and divided randomly into six groups: S180 384bearing, normal control, positive control group (Cisplatin), and 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg A. travancorica treatment groups. Body and tumor weights were acquired after 12 consecutive days and their cellular, humoral, and nonspecific immune functions were also established by relative assays. The bone marrow cellularity and beta esterase positive cells were also increased by the administration of A. travancorica extract.
