ABSTRACT

The Hedyotis L. (Rubiaceae) is native to tropical and subtropical Asia and to island of the northwest pacific. Many species of this genus are well-known medicinal plants. The present study aims to evaluate the anticancer activity of ethanol extract of aerial part of Hedyotis leschenaultiana on Dalton’s ascites lymphoma (DAL) model in Swiss albino mice. Evaluation of the anticancer effect of ethanol extract of aerial part of H. leschenaultiana on tumor growth and host survival time was made by the study of the following parameters: tumor volume, viable and nonviable cell count, and life span of host. The consequences showed decrease in tumor volume and cell viability. 406Hematological examinations revealed that the hemoglobin (Hb) count decreased in DAL-treated mice, but at the same time it was induced by the drug-treated animals and proved an increase in Hb near to normal levels. The results exposed that, the extract of aerial part of H. leschenaultiana exhibited noteworthy anticancer activity on DAL-bearing mice.
