ABSTRACT

Polyembryony is a characteristic that is expressed in many plants. Despite that this trait has been studied further since the last century, there is still a lack of information about its development and origins. Nowadays, there is an established classification of the different types of polyembryony, as well as the causes of its development in different plant species. Additionally, it has been proved that this phenomenon can be advantageous in production, exploitation, or application of the plants in which this trait is expressed. Due to the particular characteristics of polyembryony, in this chapter there will be presented several 182evidences of its occurrence among some angiosperms and gymnosperms in general, and specifically the occurrence in some plants with potential on the food industry.
