ABSTRACT

Jana Pflaeging’s article shows in a very convincing manner how image-centric stories became predominant over time in a leading popular science magazine. The general trend toward image-centricity is also noted in studies looking at other news media like newspaper front-pages, new newspaper genres or online newspaper genres. Questions regarding journalistic culture are also highly relevant for Durrani’s analysis. On a methodological level, thus, it would have been important to learn more about the way the strategies have been identified and equally important during the period investigated. An analysis based on the strategies described could ask to what extent they lead journalists to realize framings that fit and therefore reinforce existing ideologies in the context of certain discourses. The compositional narrative devices (CNDs) probably are part of news narratives realized by the entire newspaper articles, the CNDs themselves seem rather to produce a framing of the events reported than a preview of the events.
