ABSTRACT

Universities have been working with business and industry for more than a century. In today’s global economy, each is seeking new opportunities to identify and secure resources, including opportunities to utilize students’ knowledge and skills and to enhance them. North Carolina State University (NCSU) is dedicated to excellent teaching, the creation and application of knowledge, and engagement with public and private partners. Located in the NCSU College of Engineering, Industry Expansion Solutions (home to the North Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership) and the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering have collaborated to provide mechanisms for student success and industry engagement that benefit both. This chapter outlines the program developed and the mechanisms for working with industry and teaching senior design, and presents metrics that measure success for student learning and industry outcomes.
