ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the problems of Sukumaland followed by recommendations. The basic problem in Sukumaland, as in so many other relatively densely populated rural areas, is essentially one of population in relation to production. Manuring also is little dependent on land holding custom and the primary problems connected with it are making and transport, which are discussed in connexion with farm mechanization. In order to obtain the active co-operation of the people there is much to be said for the positive approach to the intricate problems of Sukumaland. Negative laws, rules, and regulations to prevent soil erosion and to stop soil fertility degradation and the like, may compel a grudging measure of compliance; but a positive effort to promote better land use has a far greater long-range prospect of enlisting active popular support and so of ultimate success.
