ABSTRACT

Through looking at frameworks that ask us to interrogate with more complexity, this chapter offers questions and provides a personal perspective on roles in artistic leadership and education. From examining context, intent, and impact, it recognizes the limitations of certain frameworks and offers ways of evaluating that require an understanding of what the work perpetuates and what it dismantles. It posits that even though we in the theater work in the realm of imagination, it is of utmost importance for marginalized identities to have control over their narratives in order to be liberated from the oppressive gazes of dominant power structures.
