ABSTRACT

Political activism within the deaf community is an important vehicle in empowering deaf people and others to have a say about their own destiny. The chapter provides some background concerning the overlooked role of postsecondary education in providing deaf persons with the skills and experiences necessary to play a key leadership role in their community. Postsecondary education must be looked upon for providing students not only with the technical skills to acquire jobs, but with the skills necessary to become leaders in their communities. The postsecondary environment is an important training ground for educating students to become involved in a variety of leadership activities while better informing them about political processes and social activism. At the postsecondary level, one can find a selection of different opportunities for students to become involved and participate in various activities. In large postsecondary programs for deaf students there are opportunities for students to join organizations or clubs specifically for deaf persons.
