ABSTRACT

There are many things to consider when applying to graduate school to become a forensic psychologist. These include what type of training program to pursue as well as which school best suits one’s needs. This chapter provides an overview of the major types of training programs – master’s, doctoral, and joint degree – and reviews relevant factors to weigh in selecting program type. Such factors include program foci, duration, competitiveness, and cost, in addition to personal concerns regarding training experiences and job opportunities desired. The chapter also suggests items to consider in picking the right school, including whether the school offers specialized forensic training, provides opportunities consistent with an applicant’s research interests, offers funding, and is accredited by the American Psychological Association.
