ABSTRACT

For those pursuing a career as a forensic psychologist, the years as a clinical psychology doctoral student consist of a number of responsibilities and opportunities. This chapter reviews and provides examples of the various requirements of doctoral programs (PhD/PsyD), including clinical training, research, and academic coursework. For each of these required realms, tips to maximize success and obtain desired outcomes are presented. This chapter discusses additional opportunities that doctoral students can pursue based on personal interests and training goals, including publications, teaching opportunities, professional development (e.g., networking and collaboration), and service opportunities (i.e., volunteer positions that support and further the field of psychology). Lastly, this chapter offers tips for self-care to maximize one’s ability to thrive as a graduate student.
