ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a more participative and integrated management system with the traditional Western model of management. The key is to move from an implementation mindset to an experimentation mindset where, as management, people no longer assume they have, or even need to have, all the answers ahead of time. The Shepherding Groups create and facilitate daily routines that link the various elements of the management system. The Shepherding Group starts by organizing Kata training with the people under their charge and then immediately get the Kata practice up and running, ensuring the desired pattern of practice. Kata Shepherding Groups help steer the step–by–step implementation and roll–out of the Training Within Industry skill use the Kata coaching cycles to experiment with countermeasures to overcome obstacles and ensure long–term success. By coaching the process of skill implementation, people set themselves up for success in practicing the skills and reaping the benefits of their application.
