ABSTRACT

The computer has long served as a model for cognitive processes and has led the way for the new science of cognition. It is usually the case that the first application of computer technology assists us in doing whatever we are already doing. Only later do we realize new and innovative applications. In this regard the computer was first used in cognitive rehabilitation as a very flexible device for stimulus presentation and as a means of storing and processing data regarding response characteristics. The computer is fast, reliable, precise, flexible, and allows tremendous control in both stimulus parameters and data analysis. In short, it is an excellent tool in the hands of a competent rehabilitation professional. The microcomputer applications that have been considered thus far are those devoted to cognitive training. The future will also see a great deal of development in computerized assessment as well, with a blending of the assessment and rehabilitation applications.
