ABSTRACT

This chapter presents basic mathematical concepts that are considered useful to understand the subsequent chapters of this book. It includes arithmetic mean and mean deviation, Boolean algebra laws, probability definition and properties, useful mathematical definitions, probability distributions, solving first-order differential equations using Laplace transforms, problems, and a list of references.

The useful mathematical definitions are those of the cumulative distribution function, probability density function, expected value, variance, Laplace transform, and final value theorem Laplace transform. Similarly, the probability distributions are the exponential distribution, binomial distribution, Rayleigh distribution, Weibull distribution, and bathtub hazard rate curve distribution.

At appropriate places, the text contains examples along with their solutions, and there are 10 problems at the end of the chapter to test readers’ comprehension in the area.
