ABSTRACT

This chapter presents methods to evaluate reliability and usability of engineering systems. The methods are failure modes and effect analysis (FMEA), fault tree analysis (FTA), the Markov method, cognitive walkthroughs, cooperative evaluation, task analysis, property checklists, expert appraisals, probability tree evaluation, and cause and effect diagrams.

At appropriate places, the chapter contains examples along with their solutions, and there are 10 problems at the end to test the readers’ comprehension in the area. Finally, the sources of most of the material presented in this chapter are given in its reference section. They will be useful to readers if they wish to delve more deeply into a specific method.
