ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how the curriculum can be made more accessible for children with learning difficulties through the use of a few powerful, flexible programs. Microtechnology can help to encourage a more positive approach to work, as many teachers have found marked improvements in pupils' concentration, motivation and pattern of work behaviour, when suitable and appropriate use of computers is made. The skilled teacher can utilize the power of the computer to help support the pupils who have difficulty with many aspects of the curriculum. With school children, the use of word processors is resulting in marked improvements in the quality and quantity of their written work. The idea is to present the pupil with a blank overlay and, through exploration by pressing the Concept Keyboard keys, written messages appear on the screen to gradually reveal an overlay picture. Concept Keyboard Match is a very effective but simple program for word, phrase and/or picture matching.
