ABSTRACT

Muri Division comprises the Emirate of Muri, known as the Hammaruwa kingdom, and the independent pagan district of Zinna. The headquarters of the Division is Jalingo, a name derived from the Fulani word for a war-camp, which was Jalingo's origin in the campaigns against the Kona and Mumuye pagans. Under the Fulani the tribal organization of the southern kingdoms persisted, though Kororofa had in fact been broken up before the arrival of the Fulani and Kona remained as the sole survival of the old Jukun empire. Buba Yero's younger brother, Hamman Ruwa, remained behind on the western edge of the Wurkum territory, and when the jihad was declared in 1804 he waged war in this area as a general in the army of his brother who had been appointed Emir of Gombe. The reign of Muhammadu Mafindi is one of the most remarkable among those of any emirs in the Northern Region.
