ABSTRACT

Adamawa Division, conterminous with the Emirate, consists of those portions of the old kingdom of Adamawa that were assigned to the British under the Conventions of 1902 and 1907, based on the dichotomous Anglo-German Agreements of 1886 and 1893. In the early 1830's Adama undertook an expedition in the north which resulted in the conquest of the Njirai-Bata districts of Malabu and Zummo occupying the watershed of the Kilengi and Tiel rivers immediately north of the Benue. The Fulani of Demsa, the capital of the most powerful of the Bata states, had at first held aloof from the jihad, but in 1810 they appealed to Adama for help against the exactions of the local Bata chief, Yideng, who was demanding a heavy tribute. Adama sent a force under Ardo Haman, who took Demsa, routed the Bata army, and was appointed governor of the territory.
