ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information about four published curriculum packages which deal with language and communication development, and have been used before with educationally subnormal children. The content and method of a curriculum package represent what we have called the 'programme' aspect. The programme is a rich source of objectives for a language curriculum, but caution should be exercised in using the programme as laid down by the manual. Jim's People form a useful set of objectives on which to base a curriculum. Curriculum packages are an amalgam of materials and programmes. In Distar the emphasis is on the programme – every single picture has been devised to teach one aspect of language, and it would be extremely difficult to use the materials for any other purpose. Distar represents the current ultimate in precision in curriculum packages, and it is best used for that – with regular daily lessons in small groups moving towards the achievement of highly specific objectives.
