ABSTRACT

The situation admits seven possible styles: classes only, groups only, individual help only, a combination of classes and groups, a combination of classes and individual help, a combination of groups and individual help, or all three methods. According to the surveys such classes average twenty pupils but are often larger. Groups average seven pupils. Remedial courses are normally only available during the first two or three years of a child's secondary school life. Two surveys undertaken with the support of the National Association for Remedial Education and other bodies in 1969 and 1970 are the major available sources of factual information on remedial education and the methods it employs. While every permutation occurs, arrangements involving classes in fact dominate the situation. In any teaching situation arrangements concerning staffing are obviously of key importance. In the remedial services a great diversity of practice confronts us, making description difficult.
