ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book presents a brief account of revolutionary situation, indicating some of the claims being made by the new order as well as areas of conflict between these and other educational priorities. It shows the different direction of development followed in recent years by the primary curriculum. The book suggests some factors that have a bearing on the development of a 'competence' in French which may generate 'performance', to use N. Chomsky's terms again. It focuses on the teachers' need for both an adequate command of French and an understanding of the learners in their charge. Individuals' progress should be constantly evident in responses to their teachers' questions. Most French courses contain implicit reference to features of French life. Some purposely make relevant ones explicit at intervals.
