ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses use of System Supplied Information (SSI), a methodology developed by a team of psychologists at Birmingham University to establish the particular training needs of staff dealing with problems related to the integration of children with special educational needs. A crucial element in the change process related to the development of whole school approaches for children with special educational needs is the identification of relevant staff training needs. The chapter focuses on comprehensive school in a Welsh Local Authority where the integration of children with special educational needs was very much on the agenda. It describes that management group was able to support and sanction. The chapter summarises Staff perception of Pupil needs – Initial (SPI) checklists, using the SSI collation sheets, over all subjects and for all teaching groups in the first year. For each of the areas of SPI a corresponding, and more detailed, functional checklist was available.
