ABSTRACT

In June 1984, the Advisory Committee on the Supply and Education of Teachers submitted advice to the Secretary of State for Education and Science and the Secretary of State for Wales, in report titled Teacher Training and Special Educational Needs. In reviewing literature from the institutions, their desires and/or requirements area of special educational needs and initial teacher training can be summarized. First, students would come to identify and understand the more common learning difficulties. Second, that all students would be presented with special educational needs issues. Third, that lectures and discussions would be linked with practical teaching and assessments. Fourth, that options would be offered to develop further skills in the area of special educational needs. Probationary teachers are open to working collaboratively with other colleagues to extend their knowledge and their ability to meet the needs of children with special educational needs. It is clear that specialist settings are under-used as placements for students on initial teacher training.
