ABSTRACT

A facilitator is a person who eases the action or performance for another. This definition implies a change in role from the transmission model to the support model of teaching. Within the institution, the facilitator is the class or unit tutor who is responsible for undertaking the professional development of the participants within an award-bearing context. The practical and the inspirational role make different demands on the facilitator. Action research is educational research which actively involves teachers in curriculum development through a process of professional development. The main focus of action research is to encourage teachers to view themselves as active researchers of their own practice. Action research when it is a marginal activity may receive institutional toleration; its products–as opposed to its process–can be accommodated as long as this separate process is conducted under the institution's surveillance.
