ABSTRACT
Designers can follow the latest fashions or they can choose a different course and demonstrate by design how a better future might look. For the latter, they will require some grasp of the bigger picture as well as a basis for thinking about where the discipline ought to be going. These two factors – one historical, the other ethical – offer a starting point for constructively contributing to the important concerns of our age and taking design in directions that are both innovative and principled.
