ABSTRACT

The favorable soil and climate, particularly in the mountain areas, have provided ideal conditions for producing the highest-quality Korean ginseng roots. The Korean white ginseng roots are usually doubly cheaper than the red ones. Korean red ginseng is famed throughout the world for being the highest quality, and the only competitors for international markets come from China and North Korea. Red ginseng is primarily exported to Hong Kong, followed by the United States, Singapore, the Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, Thailand, France, Italy, Holland, Canada, South America, and African countries. Market value of the crude cultivated Panax ginseng in Japan varies considerably with the sources of production and age. The exportation of wild ginseng root from Canada is prohibited. Ginseng was first cultivated in Ontario in the field under artificial shade in the late 1800s, near Waterford, Ontario.
