ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the critical elements related to effective team development. The choice of team type depends on the nature of the organization, the task to be performed, and workforce expertise. Many different types of teams can exist in the same organization. In relation to corporate innovation, the type of team needed is related to the form of innovation required. It is important to realize that an organization should make significant investments in both technical and interpersonal training to help team members maximize their potential as a team and avoid some of the conflicts and pitfalls that hinder team development. During the forming stage, team members are on their best behavior. During the norming stage there is an initial integration of team members where there is acceptance by team members of the team’s rules of engagement.
