ABSTRACT

Innovations in new materials, manufacturing processes, and business models will support the formation of new companies and jobs in green industries. The odds of successful innovation go up with good design, and better design leads to more innovative achievement. The company learned that management of innovation was an essential ingredient of success. The chapter discusses the design process into prototyping and manufacturing. Perhaps the best company at prototyping experiences is the Walt Disney Company. Computer numerically controlled machines build prototypes from images captured with computer-assisted design programs or machine languages such as G-code. The best design is a collaborative process between the designer and manufacturers and technicians who understand the material requirements and production processes needed for manufacturability. Koch Industries and MBA Polymers demonstrate that design can be applied through a wide range of commodity goods.
