ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some of the typical applications of femtocells in the Internet of Things (IoT) environments. It reviews the elements of femtocells in terms of communication technologies, services, and hardware units, which are essentially incorporated to analytical models with high levels of accuracy. The chapter presents various traffic-modelling approaches available in the literature for femtocells in the IoT. It also presents a classification of modelling traffics in femtocells, and discusses some open research issues. The chapter proposes a mixed spatial traffic model based on the available K-tier Heterogeneous Network of a macro cell and small cells, in which each tier has its own density, path loss exponent, Signal to Interference Ratio coverage threshold, and transmission power. The static traffic models assume a fixed number of mobile terminals that communicate with a fixed number of base stations. Femtocell technology is one of the popular infrastructures employed in Heterogeneous Network environments.
