ABSTRACT

Behaviour, whilst not usually the sole reason for teacher leaving the profession, can often be a contributing factor. School procedures and the approach of leadership highly influences the levels the stress, responsibility and workload associated with behaviour experienced by teachers. Negative learning behaviours can easily debilitate the best planned lessons and without the support of leadership or suitable school procedures, managing behaviour can become a major source of stress for new teachers. Not only are new teaching still getting to grips with pedagogy, subject content and teaching in general, they are also required to build up relationships, respect and a reputation. Trying to balance both isn’t easy. This chapter explores the challenges of behaviour and classroom management for new teachers that increase the burden on their workload, offering a range of suggestions and solutions to develop effective classroom management.
