ABSTRACT

Children with emotional and behavioural difficulties have special needs. Whatever the initial cause of difficulty in school — academic failure or feelings of social difference — these children have come to feel different and less valued. An excellent way of getting children with emotional and behavioural difficulties to explore their feelings and to become involved with the curriculum and with other children in the class, is through drama. Drama is also a useful medium in the history curriculum for encouraging empathy and feeling for life in past times. Being genuine allows the development of the positive classroom ethos. This is vital if children with emotional and behavioural difficulties are going to risk sharing their own feelings in a safe and trusting environment. The variety of source materials is important if the teacher is to enthuse children who have learning or emotional and behavioural difficulties.
