ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the components which comprise problem solving. It discusses the literature relating to strategies for maintaining attention and facilitating recall of information from memory, and the affect of metacognitive knowledge on transfer of learning and generalization. The chapter outlines a cognitive model which incorporates and integrates the component processes. It draws attention to Luria's functional systems of the brain, highlighting the manner in which executive aspects of thought influence all facets of cognition. The chapter focuses on the role of problem solving in the remediation of cognitive deficits in mentally retarded persons. It describes the model of information processing proposed by Das, Kirby, and Jarman. It summarizes the body of literature which relates to planning and decision making using retarded and nonretarded subjects. The chapter deals with the remediation of coding deficits using the Das et al. model.
