ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the drivers and nature of the engagement of India and its implications for security sector governance in post-war Nepal. The rationale is that the democratic governance of the security sector undergirds post-war peacebuilding and recovery processes. The chapter presents an understanding regarding the rise of India, its position in South Asia and India–Nepal security relations. It illustrates secondary and primary data respectively. The chapter interprets information while taking into account why the sources present information in a particular way. The analysis has been classified into three categories: nature, drivers and implications of India's engagement in Nepal. An examination of the literature surrounding security aspects of India–Nepal relations indicates three trends. The first securitises this relationship, the second characterises India's approach and the third narrates its influence. Indian involvement, specifically in the Sino-Nepalese border areas near Tibet, provokes China into a deeper strategic engagement in Nepal.
