ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a brief history of the Maldives. It introduces the famous historical products of the Maldives such as dried fish and coir rope, and then introduces another major local goods, that is, cowrie shells, both in the Arabic and Chinese accounts. When Europeans arrived, they found that the islands served as “A Great Emporium for All Parts” in which the cowrie trade had thrived for many centuries.
