ABSTRACT

The current global energy demands and pollution problems motivate substituting fossil fuels with clean transportation fuels derived from renewable sources. This chapter discusses the opportunities and prospects in the conversion of syngas into hydrocarbon fuels using Fischer-Tropsch process. The main emphasis of this chapter is on the possible integration of the biomass-to-gas technology (gasification) with gas-to-liquid technology (Fischer-Tropsch process) for the synthesis of different liquid fuels. The chapter comprehensively reviews the chemistry, mechanisms, and catalysis involved in Fischer-Tropsch process.
