ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the therapist's goals in Single-session therapy (SST). The way the author conceptualise his goal as a single-session therapist is to help the client, who is often stuck with their problem, to get unstuck in some way. This involves him first helping the client to be clear about what being unstuck looks like and then finding out from them what they need to do to make this come to pass. If the client is to get the most out of SST, their goal needs to be important to them rather than to other interested people. Sometimes people get 'sent' to therapy to achieve goals that other people want them to achieve. This does not augur well for a good outcome from SST. Thus, the SST needs to help the client set a salient goal. It is important that the client sees the link between their goal and what they need to do to achieve it.
