ABSTRACT

When considering Single-session therapy (SST), the question is often asked how long the single session should be, if the traditional therapy session lasts for 50 minutes, then should this be the length of the session in SST. For some clients, 50 minutes will suffice, for others, it will not be long enough, and for yet others, it will be too long. Some examples of SST at different lengths: The Bouverie Centre is a very well-known family institute in Victoria, Australia, that offers therapy to families in the surrounding area of Brunswick, Victoria. In their letter to families who have initially decided to attend a single session, the centre tells families to allow at least 90 minutes for the session. One-Session Treatment (OST) is an intensive form of massed exposure therapy for the treatment of specific phobias devised by Lars-Goran Ost. OST combines exposure, participant modelling, cognitive challenges, and reinforcement in a single session that lasts for up to three hours.
