ABSTRACT

In 'pre-session' contact (PSC) contact, which often is conducted by telephone, the therapist and the client work together to help the client get the most out of the face-to-face session (FFS) that follows. This chapter discusses that the therapist might suggest a task for the client to engage in between the PSC and the FFS. The client may be asked to do something to initiate the process of change or to engage in a more reflective 'noticing change' task. If such a task is suggested, then to maintain the continuity between the PSC and the FFS, the therapist would begin the latter by asking questions about the task. If the client carried out the task and did not report any improvement, the therapist might put this into a positive frame by noting that the client has provided useful information concerning what isn't going to help them.
