ABSTRACT

In the United Kingdom (UK), there is a National Health Service which provides psychological services which are free to the population and are funded mainly from general taxation and National Insurance contributions. The pathway steps and waiting times listed may vary from region to region in the UK. Low intensity psychological interventions are offered by appropriately trained people to clients with mild to moderate anxiety/depression. High intensity psychological interventions are offered by appropriately trained people to clients with moderate to severe anxiety/depression and to those who have not been helped by low intensity interventions. This should be compared with the process operating when the person decides to seek help from a walk-in service. Walk-in services are not generally available in the UK, but a comparison between the two pathways would prove a strong argument for their implementation, particularly as the UK government is committed to improving access to psychological therapies for the UK population.
