ABSTRACT
This paper considers the place of animals in Orthodox worship, the issue of animal souls, the nature of human dominion, and the long tradition of Orthodox saints who befriended animals and demonstrated compassion for animals. It is concluded that the Orthodox tradition endorses respect for animals as God’s creatures and compassionate treatment of them.
