ABSTRACT

The original purpose of autonomy arrangement offered by the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution to the ‘administration of tribal areas’ of the Northeastern states of India has undergone drastic transformation. Similar autonomy arrangement has been subsequently offered to the administration of more tribal areas either through some other legislations or the Sixth Schedule and hence some areas within the tribal areas have been granted such autonomy arrangement. Today autonomy arrangement has been caught up with the demand for more autonomy including separation of the existing states thereby undermining its original priorities.
