ABSTRACT

The first chapter develops this discussion of issues. It begins and ends by addressing the academic contexts for the book, specifically within musicology and within the sub-discipline of music analysis. It contrasts the book with explanatory discourses from other disciplines, arguing for the necessity of a musicological approach. But it then pinpoints some of the attendant departures from conventional musicology in distinguishing between the procedures of ‘rock’ and ‘classical’ musics. It then ties together issues of style and listening.
