ABSTRACT

The fifth chapter discusses some of the profusion of styles of rock music which developed from the mid-1970s. The focus is on punk, heavy metal and the importation of the synthesiser, but sections are also devoted to glam rock, to neo-prog and to music which promoted (and questioned) the ideal of authenticity – the continuing use of the guitar, and crossovers with world music. Two further aspects of music theory are introduced here, the importance of sound-source location in rock recordings and its influence on musical texture, and the importance of instrumental timbre and its modifications.
