ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book analyses the research in the field of Strategic Human Resource Management. Two main questions arise: first, what overall conclusions can be drawn from this body of research, and second, what are the emergent issues meriting future research? Human Resource specialists, or indeed other managers making decisions which impact on employment, have the potential to make choices about the kinds of employment — and employment relations — they want to encourage and realize. As the prevalence of ‘low road’ practices developed, the headlines were increasingly characterized by reports of zero-hour contracts and poor working conditions. The book discusses some core themes of human resource management are perennial and have been revisited and reworked several times under different guises. It suggests that persons occupying these roles are expected to play an increasingly strategic role in place of an administrative one.
