ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the integration of Mexico into the Pacific Rim through a series of international agreements with this region. We contend that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has become a focal point of Mexican relations with the Pacific Rim. In order to understand the complexity of Mexican trans-Pacific integration this chapter examines both the government’s strategy and the perceptions and actions of key non-state actors in Mexico. We deal with multilateral integration schemes like NAFTA, APEC, TPP and ASEAN and bilateral FTAs with Japan (in force) and the Republic of Korea (under negotiation). We evaluate possible gains, costs and future perspectives of Pacific Rim integration for Mexico.
